At Auckland Physiotherapy we are excited to be able to offer the PINC Programme, a specialised rehabilitation programme designed specifically for women diagnosed with cancer.
The PINC rehabilitation programme started in 2005 and is now the largest provider of Cancer rehabilitation services in Australasia. This individualised programme is dedicated to improving the quality of life, optimising physical and functional recovery and enhancing sense of wellbeing for any women diagnosed with cancer.
What does the PINC programme involve?
Michelle our certified PINC physiotherapist assesses each patient individually for physical impairments and effects of treatment. A programme is then created to suit each patients particular stage in recovery.
It is suitable after any type of cancer surgery or treatment and appropriate for all ages and levels of fitness. The sessions can include manual therapy, clinical Pilates, fatigue management, home exercise programmes, scar management and integration into group classes.
Why rehabilitation after cancer is important?
After undergoing often gruelling and debilitating treatments, there is little helpor guidance for return to daily activities and exercise for patients with cancer.
Research shows appropriate rehabilitation has many benefits including optimising physical function, improving energy levels, reducing the side effects of cancer treatments and easing pain and muscular tension.
Financial assistance to participate in the PINC programme is available through the PINC and STEEL Cancer Rehabilitation Trust. We look forward to empowering many women to return to exercise and the activities they love after a cancer diagnosis.
General rehabilitation after cancer treatment
You do not have to sign up to the PINC or STEEL programmes to benefit from rehabilitation after your treatment. No referral is required, simply book an appointment with Michelle and she will assess your specific needs and set up a programme designed specifically for you to help you to gradually regain your strength and energy. Michelle has completed additional training in this area to ensure the exercises she prescribes are safe for the stage of your recovery.
FEEDBACK FROM A CLIENT RECOVERING FROM LYMPHOMA
"It felt so good to have someone listen to my story with genuine interest, to ask all the ‘right’ questions. When I got to the ‘pain’ bit I am used to the conversation swiftly moving on; the “there’s nothing we can do so let’s not talk about it” approach. Michelle, in contrast, wanted to know more. For the first time I got to describe the various presentations of how my pain is at different times of the day. When she laid hands on my body it felt like they were knowing hands. I have never been a great fan of exercises, but these ones felt tailor made for me. It feels so good to be doing something productive that might help my recovery."
